Daresbury partnership complete
Date: 19th October 2010
A property development and investment company with a track record of successful partnership working has been selected as the private sector Joint Venture partner for the development of Daresbury Science and Innovation Campus.
Following a rigorous selection process, Langtree has been chosen by the public sector partners at the world-class science centre as their commercial partner to take the development forward.
Partners Halton Borough Council, Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA) and the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) are now looking forward to working with Langtree once the legal processes are finalised.
Langtree leads on some of the most significant regeneration projects in the UK and has built a strong reputation for partnership working, having established relationships with a number of public sector partners.
With its headquarters in Merseyside, Langtree has an investment portfolio of over £190m spread across the UK.
The company was chosen for its ability to work ability to work alongside Campus partners to realise the ambitious, long-term vision for Daresbury, utilising and developing the unique nature of Daresbury's high-tech community.
John Downes, Managing Director at Langtree said: "The Daresbury Science and Innovation Campus is of real regional and national significance and we are proud to have been selected as the joint venture partner to deliver subsequent phases of its development.
"Any development on this scale requires careful handling and our track record of delivering and managing high specification accommodation, while working hand in hand with the public sector, speaks for itself.
"We look forward to bringing the next phases of this development to fruition in the coming months and years."
Professor Colin Whitehouse, Chair of the Joint Venture Executive Steering Group and Deputy Chief Executive of the Science and Technology Facilities Council, said: "Langtree are very supportive of, and committed to, the Campus Vision based on a major expansion of Daresbury as a national and international location for world leading science, technology and innovation.
"The plans for the Campus are very ambitious and Langtree propose to take forward the expansion based on high quality development in order to continue to attract high growth technology businesses to Daresbury."
One of only two national Science and Innovation Campuses, Daresbury SIC is a high profile development bringing together high-tech businesses, universities, research organisations, and the business support and investor communities, to more effectively develop, and commercially exploit, the UK's world-class science base.
The creation of the Joint Venture will see the development of around 1 million square foot of space for science and innovation facilities, high-tech businesses and supporting infrastructure, bringing more than 6,000 new jobs to the area over the next 30 years.
Leader of Halton Borough Council, Cllr Rob Polhill, said: "We are very proud to have Daresbury Science and Innovation Campus within our borough and, over the years, we have been impressed at the quality of their achievements. The Campus brings major benefits to Halton and I am confident that the new Joint Venture will enable the progress made to date to be continued and accelerated.
"Daresbury is at the forefront of many developments in the knowledge economy which is a key growth sector and I now look forward to being able to work with our new partner, Langtree, in developing the Campus and in ensuring that the benefits are spread throughout the borough and beyond."
The NWDA is also investing in Daresbury SIC to construct a new grow-on building, Vanguard House, which will be completed by Q1 2011. The funding for Vanguard House will take the total NWDA investment on the Campus to over £67m.
Steven Broomhead, Chief Executive of the NWDA, said: "This joint venture is vital for the future growth of the Daresbury campus and I am delighted that a joint venture partner has now been selected. The investment in the campus by the NWDA over the years has proved to be very successful, with over 100 companies now on site and high demand for the next stage of development and our new building. The joint venture will create even more opportunities and will develop the full potential of the campus in the future and will ensure a fitting and long lasting legacy of the Agency's work in the region."
